North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad region is one of
the largest metropolitan regions in the state,
and it is home to numerous corporation and
business headquarters. Ever since its early
beginnings as a tobacco boomtown in the late
19th century and a textile hub in the 20th, the
Piedmont NC Triad cities have encouraged
growth and created conditions that fostered
expansion. The Triad region’s most notable early
businesses were founded in the fields of tobacco
near the RJ Reynolds Company, the textile
factory mills of the Hanes corporation based in
Winston-Salem, and International Textile Group
based in Greensboro, and the factories
of the Furniture Capital of the World, High
Point. Spurring trucking and other industries in
the region, these were the businesses that
helped start it all.
 As
these industries struggled to compete with the
rising costs of operation, many new industries
began as the Piedmont Triad’s cities fostered
the spirit of growth within their boundaries.
During this period of fast growth the City of
Winston-Salem NC founded the downtown Piedmont
Triad Research Park, which is an expertly
planned community that carries out research in
the life sciences and information technology. LabCorp, one of the largest clinical labs in the
world, established its corporate headquarters
and built several testing facilities in
Burlington North Carolina.
Today, the
City of Greensboro is headquarters of
several major companies including the insurance
giant United Guaranty Corporation, Gilbarco, the
maker of service station equipment, Analog
Devices, AMP Inc, and RF Micro Devices, all
electronic device companies, Fuji Foods of
Japan, Sweden’s Volvo Truck Corp, and Japan’s
Konica Manufacturing USA. The largest employers
in the area are the region’s public school
systems, hospitals, and American Express also
offers thousands of jobs in Greensboro.
