The City of Winston-Salem NC is the fourth
largest city in the state of North Carolina and
a prominent region of the Piedmont North
Carolina Triad. Often referred to as the “Twin
City” as it was created through the combining of
the historic settlement of Salem with the little
boomtown of Winston. The City of Winston-Salem

of workers in Winston Salem worked at either
Reynolds facilities or Hanes textile factories,
and the Reynolds Company imported so much French
cigarette paper and Turkish tobacco for its
Camel cigarette that the US Government
designated Winston Salem as an official port,
despite the fact that the City of Winston-Salem
NC lies more than 200 miles inland in the North
Carolina Triad region of the Piedmont. This
growth led to other opportunities and as such
Winston Salem is home to many company
headquarters and is where many nationally known
companies started. Companies such as Wachovia,
Hanes, Shell Oil Company and McLean Trucking
Company all began in the City of Winston-Salem
